(DISCLAIMER: This information is as accurate as Googling can be. Besides, if it's not 100% correct, who really cares?)
Dern: Smack Dab Middle - 2nd of 3. |
Bruce Dern was nominated once previously for Best Supporting Actor ("Coming Home” 1978).
Previous Mid Kid Winners: Jeff Bridges (“Crazy Heart” 2009); Sean Penn (“Milk” 2008) (“Mystic River” 2003); Denzel Washington (“Training Day” 2001).
Last Year: Denzel Washington and Joaquin Phoenix were both Middle Child Best Actor nominees, but lost to Daniel Day Lewis (“Lincoln”). Day-Lewis is NOT a Middle Child, but Lincoln was, so it’s kind of a moral victory!
Blanchett: 2nd of 3. Adams: 4th of 7! |
Cate Blanchett has been nominated six times, winning once for Best Supporting Actress (“The Aviator” 2004). She was nominated for Best Actress (“Elizabeth” 1998); Best Supporting Actress (“Notes on a Scandal” 2006); and twice in the same year for Best Actress (“Elizabeth: The Golden Age” 2007) and Best Supporting Actress ("I’m Not There” 2007). Amy Adams has been nominated four times for Best Supporting Actress: "The Master" 2012, "The Fighter" (2010), "Doubt" (2008), "Junebug" (2005).
Previous Mid Kid Winners: Kate Winslett (“The Reader” 2008); Helen Mirren (“The Queen” 2006).
Last Year: No Mid Kid nominees. No fair -- I’m telling Mom!
Leto: 2nd of 4. Abdi: 2nd or 3rd of 4. |
This is the first nomination for Jared Leto and Barhad Abdi.
Previous Mid Kid Winners: Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight” 2008); Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules” 1999). While technically a Middle Child, Caine did not know he had a younger half-brother until he was 58!
Last Year: No Middle Child nominees. Typical Middle Child treatment.
Roberts: 3rd of 4. Nyong'o: 2nd of 6. |
This is the fourth time Julia Roberts has been nominated, winning once for Best Actress (“Erin Brockovich” 2000). She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress (“Steel Magnolias” 1989); Best Actress (“Pretty Woman” 1990). Lupita Nyong’o is a first time nominee.
Previous Mid Kid Winners: Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables” 2012); Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator” 2004); Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago” 2002); Kim Basinger (“L.A. Confidential” 1997).
Last Year: Sally Field and Anne Hathaway were Middle Child nominees.
BEST DIRECTOR - Mid Kid Nominees: None. I hope they ALL lose.
Previous Mid Kid Winners: Tom Hooper (“The Kings Speech” 2010); Ethan Coen (“No Country for Old Men” 2007). Of course, Ethan had to share his Oscar with his older brother, Joel!
